Portable OPM-MEG detects interictal epileptiform discharges equivalent to SQUID-MEG
PubMed4/23/2026ยท04/23/26๐ USA
Summary
A head-to-head comparison of optically pumped magnetometer MEG and conventional SQUID-MEG in 24 epilepsy patients found equivalent sensitivity for interictal epileptiform discharge detection (88% vs 86%) with OPM-MEG also identifying 23% more discharges due to better coverage of temporal and orbitofrontal regions accessible without the fixed helmet geometry of SQUID systems.
Why it matters
Clinical-grade epilepsy MEG without a shielded room and fixed helmet is a practical revolution for epilepsy presurgical evaluation. This head-to-head data gives neurologists the evidence needed to adopt OPM-MEG in routine clinical practice.
