Theta Deep Brain Stimulation for Cognitive Enhancement in Parkinson's Disease

ClinicalTrials.gov9/1/2024ยท09/01/24๐ŸŒ Global

Summary

This study investigates whether theta-frequency deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus can improve cognitive function in Parkinson's disease patients who already have DBS implants. Participants will undergo cognitive testing with DBS turned on and off at different stimulation frequencies.

Why it matters

Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease significantly impacts quality of life but is often untreated. If theta-frequency DBS can safely enhance cognition, it would represent the first DBS parameter adjustment with dual motor-cognitive benefits.
