North Shore University Hospital First on East Coast to Deploy Lungpacer AeroPace Neurostimulation Device
Summary
Northwell Health's North Shore University Hospital became the first hospital on the U.S. East Coast to successfully treat a patient with Lungpacer's FDA-approved AeroPace device. The system uses neurostimulation to activate and strengthen the diaphragm muscle through transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation, helping patients wean off mechanical ventilation faster. Studies show the device can decrease ventilator time by up to 43 percent, reducing it by approximately three days for patients on ventilation for more than 96 hours.
Why it matters
This deployment represents growing real-world adoption of neurostimulation therapies beyond traditional neurological indications into critical care. By preventing diaphragm atrophy in ventilated patients, AeroPace addresses a significant unmet need that affects nearly 2.5 million U.S. patients annually and could reduce the up to $96 billion in direct care costs associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation.
