Perceptual and Cognitive Effects of Focal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Auditory Cortex in Tinnitus

Neuromodulation1/1/2025ยท01/01/25๐ŸŒ USA

Summary

This pilot study randomized 20 participants with chronic tinnitus to active or sham 4x1 high-definition tDCS of left auditory cortex. Repeated sessions of auditory-cortex tDCS did not adversely affect hearing or cognition and may modestly improve hearing in noise. However, tDCS appeared to interfere with motor learning practice effects observed in the sham group.

Why it matters

Understanding the perceptual and cognitive effects of tDCS is critical for its safe clinical application. This study confirms that auditory cortex tDCS does not worsen hearing or cognition while potentially offering modest auditory benefits. The interference with motor learning highlights the importance of carefully timing cognitive and stimulation interventions.
