Deep brain stimulation surgical timing, outcomes, and prognostic factors in patients with Parkinson's disease: A Chinese retrospective multicenter cohort study

PLOS ONE1/8/2025ยท01/08/25๐ŸŒ Asia

Summary

This multicenter Chinese cohort study examined DBS outcomes across different Parkinson's disease durations. Motor, neuropsychological, and quality-of-life improvements were observed across all disease durations, with the most substantial benefits in mid-duration patients. Levodopa response was a consistent positive prognostic factor.

Why it matters

The finding that surgical timing affects DBS outcomes has direct clinical implications for referral patterns. The identification of levodopa response as a key prognostic factor supports existing practices while highlighting caution for short-duration patients with rapidly progressive symptoms.
