Transparent, metal-free PEDOT:PSS neural interfaces for simultaneous recording of low-noise electrophysiology and artifact-free two-photon imaging

Nature Communications4/29/2025ยท04/29/25๐ŸŒ Asia

Summary

This study developed an optically transparent PEDOT:PSS neural electrode array achieving impedance of 45.8 kO at 1 kHz with 20 x 20 um electrodes. The metal-free array enabled artifact-free two-photon imaging combined with precise electrophysiological recordings including extracellular action potentials and low-noise local field potentials in vivo.

Why it matters

Simultaneous electrophysiology and optical imaging is critical for understanding neural circuits. This transparent electrode technology eliminates imaging artifacts while maintaining recording quality, advancing tools for neuroscience research and potentially clinical monitoring applications.
