BCI@Home: Brain Computer Interface Solutions to Enable Youth Living With Severe Disabilities (BCI@home)
Summary
This study evaluates the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) at home for children ages 5-18 with severe physical disabilities including cerebral palsy and pediatric stroke. Participants receive a BCI kit with headset and software, then complete 12 virtual sessions over 3-6 months to pursue personalized participation goals. The study measures achievement of family-identified goals using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) along with quality of life and EEG data.
Why it matters
Home-based BCI could democratize access to neurotechnology for children who currently must travel to major medical centers. If successful, this model could be replicated globally, giving children with severe disabilities a new pathway to participate in daily life activities.
