Magnetoencephalography with optically pumped magnetometers achieves wearable operation
PubMed3/24/2026ยท03/24/26๐ Europe
Summary
University College London demonstrated a 49-channel OPM-MEG system worn as a helmet during naturalistic movement. The device achieved spatial resolution and sensitivity comparable to conventional SQUID-MEG systems costing 10x more, while operating at room temperature and allowing full head movement during recording.
Why it matters
OPM-MEG brings clinical-grade magnetoencephalography out of the shielded room and into wearable form. This UCL demonstration is the most mature OPM-MEG system yet shown, signaling commercial viability within 3-5 years.
