Transcranial direct current stimulation enhances cognitive function in schizophrenia: A randomized double-blind sham-controlled trial
Psychiatry Research2/1/2025ยท02/01/25๐ Europe
Summary
This double-blind RCT of 173 schizophrenia patients found that 10 sessions of bifrontal tDCS significantly improved working memory and neurocognition compared to sham. A higher proportion of patients in active tDCS reported cognitive improvement. This represents one of the largest tDCS trials in schizophrenia to date.
Why it matters
Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is a major contributor to disability and currently lacks effective pharmacological treatments. This large RCT supports tDCS as a viable cognitive enhancement intervention, potentially offering a new therapeutic modality for this underserved population.
