Transcranial photobiomodulation improves working memory in healthy adults: double-blind RCT
PubMed3/28/2026ยท03/28/26๐ USA
Summary
A double-blind sham-controlled RCT of 100 healthy adults tested 6 weeks of daily 10-minute transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) using 1064nm near-infrared laser to prefrontal cortex. Active tPBM improved N-back working memory accuracy by 14% and reaction time by 23ms versus sham, with 1-month follow-up showing sustained effects.
Why it matters
Photobiomodulation adds a new non-invasive modality to cognitive enhancement. These RCT results in healthy adults suggest tPBM may have consumer wellness applications beyond its studied clinical indications.
