Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Nonsurgical Refractory Back Pain With or Without Leg Pain

Neuromodulation6/1/2025ยท06/01/25๐ŸŒ Europe

Summary

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated 19 reports of 16 unique studies on spinal cord stimulation for persistent spinal pain syndrome type 1. Meta-analysis showed significant pain reduction with SCS compared to conventional medical management at six months. Statistically significant results favoring SCS were also observed for physical function and health-related quality of life up to 24 months.

Why it matters

Chronic back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. This meta-analysis supports SCS as an effective intervention for patients who have exhausted non-surgical options, potentially informing clinical guidelines and expanding access to neuromodulation therapies for this large patient population.
