Research Paper
A brain atlas of neuroinflammation in human depression from post-mortem single-cell RNA sequencing
PubMed2/20/2026ยท02/20/26๐ USA
Summary
Analysis of single-cell transcriptomes from 800,000 cells across 10 brain regions of 17 major depression donors versus 17 matched controls identified microglia activation signatures and oligodendrocyte stress responses as the primary cellular changes in depression. Novel cell type-specific gene networks were identified as potential drug targets.
Why it matters
Post-mortem single-cell atlasing of depression provides the first comprehensive cellular landscape of the disease in human tissue. The microglial and oligodendrocyte findings open new drug target classes beyond monoamine systems.
