Research Paper
Predictability of sleep slow oscillation emergence and spatial extent from pre-onset neural dynamics
Scientific Reports6/19/2026ยท06/19/26๐ USA
Summary
Using high-density EEG from 29 healthy adults, this study examined neural dynamics preceding sleep slow oscillation onset to predict their spatial extent. The findings reveal pre-onset patterns that could enable closed-loop intervention targeting sleep slow oscillations for memory enhancement.
Why it matters
The ability to predict slow oscillation emergence opens the door to precisely timed closed-loop stimulation during sleep. This could revolutionize non-invasive approaches for memory consolidation and cognitive enhancement in both healthy aging and neurodegenerative disease.
