Ruten raises $2M Seed for implantable BCI to restore swallowing function after stroke
Summary
Ruten, a Japanese neurotechnology startup, has raised $2 million in a seed round from Coral Capital. Founded in July 2023, the company is developing an implantable brain-computer interface system to restore swallowing function after stroke. Ruten is also collaborating with the University of Southern California and the NIH on a peripheral nerve stimulation project for post-stroke dysphagia.
Why it matters
Post-stroke dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) affects a significant portion of stroke survivors and can lead to serious complications including aspiration pneumonia. Ruten's BCI approach represents a novel application of neural interface technology to restore critical bodily functions, with support from Japan's Defense Equipment Agency for motor and cognitive decoding research.
