INBRAIN completes enrollment in world's first graphene neural interface human study — 8 patients, zero device failures
Summary
INBRAIN Neuroelectronics announced completion of patient enrollment in its first-in-human study (NCT06368310) of a graphene cortical interface on April 20, 2026. Ten patients were recruited and eight were treated surgically at Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester — with no perioperative device failures and complete datasets obtained from all eight. Graphene electrodes were used during brain tumor resection, and in awake surgery cases patients performed tasks such as object naming, enabling high-resolution decoding of speech representation. The ultra-thin, flexible graphene interface outperformed conventional rigid electrodes in signal fidelity. The study now enters a 90-day follow-up phase with full results expected later in 2026.
Why it matters
Eight humans implanted with graphene-based neural interfaces, zero failures, and high-resolution speech decoding in awake surgery — this is the landmark first human dataset for graphene BCI technology. INBRAIN CEO Carolina Aguilar noted the results demonstrate graphene can safely interface with the human brain and capture signals with fidelity metals 'can barely see'.
