UK medical device testing hits record high as MHRA backs growth in brain and AI technology

GOV.UK2/19/2026ยท02/19/26๐ŸŒ Europe

Summary

The MHRA approved 17% more clinical investigations in 2025 compared with 2024, reaching the highest level on record. Neurotechnology studies doubled since 2024 to make up around a quarter of all UK applications. The MHRA is rolling out fee waivers for micro and small UK firms and is part of a UK-wide partnership to update national guidance on neurotechnology research.

Why it matters

The surge in neurotechnology clinical trials in the UK, combined with MHRA support measures, positions Britain as an attractive destination for neurotech innovation. The new national guidance on neurotechnology research will make it quicker and clearer for clinicians and companies to launch BCI studies.
