South Korea's ETRI develops neural recording chip with 0.8µW per channel power consumption
IEEE Spectrum4/13/2026·04/13/26🌐 Asia
Summary
ETRI in Daejeon published results on a 256-channel neural recording ASIC consuming 0.8 microwatts per channel — a 10x improvement over state-of-the-art — enabling months of operation on a coin cell battery for untethered implants.
Why it matters
Power consumption is the primary size constraint on implanted BCIs. A 10x improvement in recording efficiency would fundamentally change what is possible in minimally invasive implantable device designs.
