Precision Neuroscience Demonstrates Non-Invasive BCI Control Without Brain Implantation

pharmaphorum7/22/2026·28d ago🌐 USA

Summary

Precision Neuroscience published video evidence that its investigational Layer 7 system — a thin electrode array placed on the brain's outer surface without penetrating brain tissue — let people control a computer, navigate a tablet, and play games using thought alone. The system has been tested in nearly 100 participants across 18 US academic medical centers, all of whom were already undergoing brain surgery for epilepsy or tumor removal, since no separate implantation procedure was required. Unlike rival systems from Neuralink, Paradromics, Synchron, and Blackrock Neurotech, Layer 7 is designed to be removable and upgradeable. The company received FDA 510(k) clearance for the device in 2025.

Why it matters

A non-invasive, removable alternative to implanted BCIs could broaden the eligible patient population and ease regulatory and adoption barriers relative to permanently implanted competitors.
