Science Corp Launches PRIMA Retinal Implant in Europe After CE Mark Approval

MobiHealthNews7/22/2026ยท28d ago๐ŸŒ Europe

Summary

Science Corporation announced the commercial launch of PRIMA, a subretinal photovoltaic implant that restores functional central vision in patients with geographic atrophy from age-related macular degeneration, after receiving CE marking from DEKRA under EU Medical Device Regulation. The system pairs a 2mm implant with camera-equipped glasses that project near-infrared light, which the implant converts into electrical stimulation of surviving retinal cells. In a 38-patient clinical trial, 84% of patients regained the ability to read letters, numbers, and words. The approval covers 30 European countries, with the first commercial implant expected in Germany.

Why it matters

PRIMA is the first BCI-based device to receive CE marking specifically for restoring detailed form vision rather than just light perception, a meaningfully higher functional bar for patients who had lost the ability to read or recognize faces.
