China publishes national BCI standards — first country to formally regulate BCI as a standards-defined sector

Nimbus BCI Weekly4/11/2026·04/11/26🌐 Asia

Summary

China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) published a new batch of national standards covering brain-computer interfaces on April 11, 2026 — alongside standards for semiconductors and smart vehicles. The move follows the world's first commercial BCI approval (Neuracle NEO, March 13, 2026) and signals China is treating BCI not just as an approved product category but as a standards-regulated sector, enabling consistent manufacturing, interoperability, and procurement at scale. China is now the only country with both a commercial BCI product approval and a formal national standards framework for BCI manufacturing and performance.

Why it matters

National BCI standards from SAMR transform the regulatory landscape — instead of each product being evaluated individually, manufacturers now have specifications to build to, hospitals have procurement standards to reference, and insurance bodies have technical definitions for coverage decisions. This is the institutional infrastructure that enables BCI to scale from dozens of units to thousands. No other country has moved this fast.
