First non-human primate study of Neuralink N1 shows 5-year stable recording with no brain damage

Nature Biomedical Engineering4/12/2026ยท04/12/26๐ŸŒ USA

Summary

Neuralink published peer-reviewed 5-year histological data from macaques implanted with the N1 chip, showing stable single-unit recordings and no evidence of neuroinflammation, gliosis, or device migration at the 5-year timepoint. The study, published in Nature Biomedical Engineering, included 6 animals with complete post-mortem brain analysis.

Why it matters

Five-year primate histology showing no brain damage is the strongest long-term biocompatibility data for any BCI device published in a peer-reviewed journal. This directly addresses the most common clinical concern about chronic implantable BCIs and will significantly influence FDA review of their De Novo filing.
