Neuromodulation for Treatment of Tinnitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Summary
This systematic review and meta-analysis included 19 randomized controlled trials (N=1186) evaluating neuromodulation versus sham for tinnitus. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and tDCS showed significant short-term benefit on Tinnitus Handicap Inventory scores, while rTMS showed significant long-term benefit. tDCS also significantly reduced comorbid depression as measured by BDI scores.
Why it matters
This is the most comprehensive meta-analysis of neuromodulation for tinnitus to date, quantifying treatment effects across different modalities. The finding that different stimulation approaches have different temporal profiles of benefit suggests that modality selection should be individualized based on patient characteristics and treatment goals, particularly for patients with comorbid depression.
