Sequential Multilocus Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Treatment of Tinnitus With and Without Comorbid Major Depressive Disorder

Neuromodulation6/1/2024ยท06/01/24๐ŸŒ USA

Summary

This open-label study treated 40 patients with chronic tinnitus using multilocus sequential rTMS administered to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex followed by auditory cortex. Patients showed significant mean improvement at sessions 5 and 10, with 48% responding within ten treatment sessions. Those with comorbid MDD required extended treatment to achieve comparable improvement.

Why it matters

Tinnitus affects 10-15% of the population and has limited treatment options. This multilocus sequential rTMS approach targeting both prefrontal and auditory cortices shows promising results, particularly for patients without comorbid depression. The finding that depressed patients need extended treatment has important clinical implications for tailoring neuromodulation protocols to individual patient profiles.
