Deep Brain Stimulation for Refractory PTSD
ClinicalTrials.gov12/1/2024ยท12/01/24๐ Global
Summary
This Phase 1 pilot trial at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will be the first powered clinical trial exploring deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant PTSD. The study uses the Medtronic PC+S sensing neurostimulator implanted in the ventral striatum/ventral capsule region, with both open-label and double-blind crossover phases. Up to 12 participants with severe, chronic PTSD will receive DBS implants.
Why it matters
PTSD affects millions worldwide, and a substantial proportion of patients do not respond to medication or psychotherapy. DBS represents a potentially transformative approach for the most severe, treatment-resistant cases.
