DARPA awards $45M to 6 teams for next-generation bidirectional neural interfaces
DARPA News3/21/2026ยท03/21/26๐ USA
Summary
DARPA's Neural Engineering System Design program awarded $45M across 6 research teams to develop bidirectional neural interfaces with at least 1 million electrode channels โ 1,000x more than current clinical systems. Teams include groups from MIT, UCSF, Georgia Tech, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, and a consortium led by Paradromics.
Why it matters
DARPA's 1-million-channel target is 1,000x beyond current state-of-the-art and will pull the entire field forward. Paradromics leading one of only 6 funded teams validates their high-bandwidth cortical recording approach and gives them access to $7.5M in non-dilutive funding alongside their VC backing.
