South Korea's KIST develops neural probe with 1024 recording sites in a 50-micron-wide shank
Nature Electronics3/27/2026·03/27/26🌐 Asia
Summary
Korea Institute of Science and Technology researchers published results on a silicon neural probe achieving 1024 recording sites on a shank just 50 microns wide — narrower than a human hair — using a custom ASIC stacked directly on the probe backend. The device records from all channels simultaneously with 10µV RMS noise.
Why it matters
A 1024-site probe at 50-micron width approaches the theoretical limit of tissue displacement per recording channel. This Korean ASIC-on-probe architecture could compete with Neuropixels as a platform for next-generation dense neural recording.
