Large-scale high-density brain-wide neural recording in nonhuman primates

Nature Neuroscience7/1/2025ยท07/01/25๐ŸŒ USA

Summary

This study described the design, fabrication, and performance of Neuropixels 1.0 NHP, a high-channel electrode array with 4,416 recording sites along a 45-mm shank for large animal brains. The probe enables simultaneous multi-area recording from thousands of neurons with single or multiple probes, substantially increasing scalability relative to existing technologies.

Why it matters

High-density neural recording in primate models is essential for translational neuroscience and BCI development. This technology enables new classes of experiments and accelerates the path from animal studies to human BCIs for paralysis and neurological disorders.
