Google DeepMind publishes largest ever neuroscience dataset: 1 petabyte of mouse cortex connectome

Google DeepMind Blog4/14/2026·04/14/26🌐 Global

Summary

Google DeepMind and Harvard released the MICrONS mm³ dataset — a complete electron microscopy reconstruction of a cubic millimeter of mouse visual cortex containing 200,000 neurons, 500 million synapses, and 1 petabyte of raw imaging data. All data is freely available with AI-assisted annotation tools.

Why it matters

This is the largest connectome dataset ever assembled by an order of magnitude. Open release of this resource will accelerate neural circuit modeling, synapse-level AI, and the design of biologically-inspired neural interfaces.
