Catalonia Commits EUR20M to Build a New Neurotechnology Research Center at UAB

The Catalan government will invest EUR20 million between 2026 and 2029 toward building the Center for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (CENIT-UAB) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona's Bellaterra campus, part of a roughly EUR45 million total project. The 17,809-square-meter facility will bring together UAB's existing Institute of Neurosciences, psychology and cognition research groups, and a newly created neurotechnology platform, with planned research spanning neuroprosthetics, brain-computer interfaces, neuromodulation, and nerve regeneration aimed at conditions including stroke, Parkinson's, ALS, and spinal cord injury. The center is designed to sit alongside Bellaterra's existing nanotechnology, microelectronics, and materials-science institutes, and will work directly with hospitals including Vall d'Hebron and the Guttmann Institute to connect research with patients, alongside neurotechnology companies for commercialization. Construction is set to be awarded in May 2027, with operations targeted for the end of 2029.
