Microtesla transcranial magnetic field stimulation suppresses neuroinflammation — Cell 2025 — Fareon technology
Summary
Researchers from Fareon published in Cell demonstrating that transcranial exposure to microtesla-range magnetic fields — far weaker than conventional TMS — suppresses neuroinflammation and neuronal oxidative stress through modulation of reactive oxygen species-sensitive ion channels. In vitro and in vivo models showed significant reduction in microglial activation markers and inflammatory cytokines. The finding provides a mechanistic basis for developing ultra-low-intensity magnetic field therapies for neuroinflammatory CNS conditions including Alzheimer's, MS, and stroke.
Why it matters
Cell publication of a mechanism paper for ultra-low-intensity magnetic field neuroprotection is a major scientific validation for an underexplored neuromodulation modality. The ROS-sensitive ion channel mechanism identified provides a druggable target concept and a pathway for rational parameter optimization — transforming microtesla magnetic stimulation from empirical observation to mechanistically-guided therapy development.
