A sequential dual-site repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for major depressive disorder: A randomized clinical trial
Summary
This randomized clinical trial examined a sequential dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex accelerated rTMS protocol for major depressive disorder. At week 4, the active group showed significantly larger Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale reduction. Response rates were 57.69% versus 23.08%, and remission rates were 38.46% versus 15.38% for active versus sham. Resting-state fMRI revealed dissociable symptom improvement associated with specific functional connectivity changes.
Why it matters
Depression is a leading cause of disability globally. This dual-site accelerated protocol offers a cost-efficient, rapid-acting treatment that could be implemented widely in TMS clinics, potentially reducing treatment duration while maintaining efficacy and improving patient access.
